Introducing Leaderboards

by Jaime Iniesta

UPDATE: Global Reports have been archived as of March 2021.

Good news! We’ve seen lately an increase in the number of education sites being checked for Accessibility and HTML conformance in Rocket Validator. This is great because education is the base of society, and ensuring education sites have fewer access barriers is really important for all of us.

We wondered what the current status is in regards to A11Y and HTML conformance, within the major United States universities, so we created a leaderboard to reflect that:

US Universities A11Y & HTML ranking

To create this leaderboard we’ve initially taken the top 20 universities listed in U.S. News, and checked their main websites using the latest versions of the axe-core accessibility engine and the W3C Validator on these pages.

Based on these checks we’ve applied a score, where we take the average number of issues per page, and where errors are counted twice and warnings are counted once.

So, the lower the score, the fewer access barriers a site has - so the site is ranked higher.

These sites are scheduled to re-check monthly, so it’s a live leaderboard that will reflect changes in the rankings.

And, without further ado, here is the current TOP 5 US Universities A11Y & HTML leaderboard:

  • Johns Hopkins University
  • University of Notre Dame
  • Georgetown University
  • Emory University
  • Northwestern University

We’ll be adding new candidates to this leaderboard - if you have any suggestion for other US universities that should be listed here please hit reply to let us know.
